My day job sent me to the "Eye of the Storm" Because i work in a properties environment I have to take care of properties and have to take care and watch them during Hurricanes along the Texas coast. Hurricane Dolly (2008 First landfall Hurricane) became a Cat-2 Cane on Wednesday for a few hours before hitting land. I was stationed in McAllen Texas as Dolly churned in the Gulf.

i took this shot with my Blackberry Cell Phone as i went into a Lowes in Pharr Texas to purchase a flashlight the night before landfall. i know most of my photos are taken with sometimes some impressive gear but sometimes the best shots are made with what you have on your hip.

This shot was facing the West as the sun set over the city of McAllen. i tell people all the time when they see my camera equipment that you don't need $20,000 worth of cameras and lenses to make a great photo. This proves my point. What is completely ironic is I just received a new 400mm 2.8 VR lens but it is locked up in my house. I have not taken a shot with that lens but I get a nice sunset with a Cell Phone camera.

As For Information I think the Blackberry is a 3meg-pix camera?? Maybe? Shutter? Aperture? your guess is as good as mine...

Old Swimmer

Assignment: North West Weekly, North San Antonio Times, Southside Reporter

Must be July as everything I am shooting is people in the water. Things are also very slow right now so now is a good time for a Hurricane or/and a trip to Vegas. Both will be happening soon I'm sure. This assignment was to shoot a masters swimming team called the Masters of South Texas. Old guys and girls swimming for competition.

Because most of these swimmers have day jobs they practice at local Natatoriums at un-godly hours. This shoot was from 5:30am - 7:00am. I did catch three publications with this one shoot so it should pay off in the long run but still the power drink was in full effect that morning.

I hate shooting in Natatoriums, basically because of the water, humidity and they are usually dark. But with my ISO-friendly D3 things were not as bad as they use to be.

D3 camera with my 70-200mm lens pushed to 200mm. ISO is at 2500. I was in Manual mode so the camera would not get tricked by the reflection on the water. Shutter is at 1/800, aperture is at f/2.8 and I am sitting on the deck to get "under" the swimmer and get some "eyes"

What looks to be a poor attempt at a Jimmy Buffet concert (if you have ever seen one you know what I am talking about) is actually a stretching exercise for swimmers. The two swimmers facing the camera are both world class swimmers, both are from San Antonio, both competed in the US Olympic trails and yes both came up short of China.

Brett Denham (left) just finished up his 4 years of swimming at SMU and Marissa Jasek (right) is going to be a senior at TAMU. Both were asked to come and talk to a group of young swimmers on the locally famous Shadow Cliff swim club. Both almost-Olympians got in the water and swam some laps with the kids too.

It's my D300 again with my 17-55mm lens backed out to 17mm. I was running a shutter priority at 1/200 to keep my depth of field large. Aperture was f/16 and I had a -0.3 exposure composition to take advantage of some early morning sun light effects. I have my camera held up over my head shooting blind on this one.

Assignment: Fiesta Magazine

Over the summer I have been asked by the Editor of Fiesta Magazine to do several shoots. Magazine work lends itself to more creativity and liberal use of the functions of the camera. All of the shoots have been a lot of fun.

Friday night I got to go to a new Bar/Restaurant on the far west side of town called “The Stockyards” and shoot the country western crowd dancin’, glancin’ and romancin’

The place was not packed so I wanted to show some movement in the photos of the people on the dance floor. Also I did not want to show identifiable faces in the photos either. And the place was pitch dark as well.

I placed the camera on top of a low table top in this shot to hold it steady. Ran several attempts at this on manual settings until I got a couple I liked.

Nikon D300 camera (I can explain why I was not using my D3). 17-55mm lens again at 17mm. aperture at 2.8 (wide open) ISO-1600, the shutter was nice a slow at1/1.6.

Who needs a Drink

Assignment: Emily Morgan Hotel

Sometimes i get calls from people wanting me to shoot some strange things. Today i was contracted to shoot a drink. That's right a Drink. Just a Drink. And i got paid to do so. I guess some people would argue that still-life is very hard to pull off. i say with a little lighting everything is easy.

The Drink was dark in a frosted mug, i shot this adult beverage fro several angles and several places in the Emily Morgan Hotel bar. hmmmmmmm that's all you want me to do?

i shot this one from around the table section on top of a divider.

D3 this time, no flash. 50mm lens at well 50mm. aperture was at 2.8 but should have been at 1.8 my mistake. Shutter was pulled down to 1/30 (now you see why I should have been at 1.8). ISO was at 800 but with the D3 who cares right.

Early morning summer work outs are the norm at local high schools in South Texas. While they are voluntary most kids wanting to "make the team" participate at some level in the athletic work outs. Working on an assignment about the Johnson Jaguars and their first year program I had a chance to take some shots of kids working out at Tejeda Middle School as the High School is not finished.

I found a group of freshman working on jumping drills, i put my camera on the ground in the shadow of the box and sprayed a few looking for something like this. Basically tricked the camera so I got a silhouette of the kids in the air.

D300 Camera with my 17-55mm lens at 17mm. ISO is at 400 for no reason at all. 5.6 on the f-stop for a bit of depth since I was focusing on the bottom of the box. Shutter came out at 1/5000 because of the trick.

I thought it might be a good time to
update the kiddos. This was taken at the San Antonio Zoo. Summer time slows down for me so I try and spend as much time with the kids as i can, come September i am back to the grind (I hope). My son in this photo is 6 and will be a first grader at Bulverde Creek this coming fall. He has a life-long disability but the UPs out weigh the DOWNs buy a million times if you know what i mean. i work my tail off for him. He may never say "thank you" but well you know...

My Daughter in this photo is 4 years old, and has a heart of gold but a mouth like a sailor!! Gonna have to fix that before public schooling kicks in with her.

Shot with my D3 with the 70-200mm vr lens attached. I’m at 140mm, ISO is set to 250, Aperture is at 2.8 to frame the kids against the shrubs in the back, I ran a -.7 exposure comp to get some nice dark colors for an early morning photo.

Driving home from the River Walk I got a call from the editor of the North San Antonio Times. He had an emergency assignment at the Olmos Dam Road. Early in the morning a large tree fell on the road and blocked the road from cars being able to get by. When I got there the San Antonio public works crew had already chopped most of it up. But pulled the rest of it out onto the road and begin to take it down to manageable pieces.

The public works guys were very friendly and accommodating. This photo will probably not run as it does not show the road but it does show the conditions some of our city workers have to work in.

I used my D300 with my 17-55mm lens pushed in to 55mm. ISO-400, aperture is set at 2.8, shutter at 1/2500. Exposure compensation at +0.3

July 4th on the River Walk

Assignment: Fiesta Magazine

Got up Early in the morning on July 4th as I was off from work and I drove downtown to shoot the River Walk. I don't think I have ever been on the river that early in the day but the river boat cruses were already in full flight by the time I got on the banks. I walked the whole way around shooting river boats, tourist and the occasional duck.

This Shot was taken from the river banks just past the St Mary’s Street Bridge and across the river from the brand new “Aztec on the River” shopping center.

On this shot (one of the first of the morning) i wanted to capture the reflection in the water as a river boat past by. I used my D300 with a 17-55mm lens pulled all the way out to 17mm. ISO-250, shutter 1/640 and aperture 2.8.

Reporter Pat Turner asked me to get some shots of the Shadow Cliff Swim team in action at the NE Swim Meet Championships. Club swimming over the summer is about all we got right now in this area so I was more than happy to go get some shots. The “Sharks” were going for their 19th consecutive championship. Talk about domination.

I am assuming the best swimmers in San Antonio all live in the Shadow Cliff neighborhood…

Using my D3 with my 70-200mm lens carefully set to 170mm. ISO-3200 to compensate for the Natatorium being a dungeon, aperture is set at 2.8, shutter at 1/800.

Assignment: A Friends Wedding

A Good Friend of mine and fellow photographer asked me to shoot his wedding. As I am such a nice guy I did it for free and gave him the files. It was a small short ceremony that was well done. I wish both the bride a groom the best of luck.

Before the wedding began the ring bearer and the two flower girls were standing in the doorway of the sanctuary. I was actually trying to get by when I snapped this one from a few feet away with a wide-angle. It turning out to be one of my favorites from the day.

Using my D300 with my 17-55mm pulled back to 17mm. ISO-320, aperture is set at 2.8, shutter at 1/60. The SB-800 flash did fire.

During a recent Dog Days of Summer event at the San Antonio Botanical Garden the Bexar County Humane Society Microchiped Dogs and Cats. The Microchips, no bigger than a rice pellet, are injected under the skin on the pets back. The Chips are used to track lost dogs back to their owners if picked up by the City Pound or the Humane Society. The Chips and the sensors are used all over the world.

Berani attacked and almost killed a Zookeeper when the keeper forgot to close and lock a series of safety doors. One of the first things you do when you start up an NCAA Division II football program is you hire a head coach. Coach Santiago will always be remembered as the first ever head coach of UIW. For the next 2 years he will recruit and plan for Cardinal Football.

Clark High School "Funday Sunday" was anything but fun or sunny. a slow driving rain worked over the crowd and band during the parade. The snare was looking a bit damp so I thought I could get a feel for the day with a nice photo of rain water left on the drum.

Clark High School put on a Rocket launching competition as part of Fiesta Week in San Antonio. Several Schools showed up to compete as they did their best to launch small plastic Rockets at targets on a football field. The trophies were given away later but never launched.

University of the Incarnate Word's Joe Villa of Eagle Pass slides home safe vs St Mary's in a day time double hitter late in the season. UIW and St Mary's always play each other tough as the cross town rivalry continues. most of the players on these teams have played against and with each other since they were in grade school.
